In an international study, the European Biogas Association carried out emission measurements at biogas plants.The emissions of different biogas plant concepts are to be evaluated and simple strategies to prevent these emissions are to be developed.In an international study, the methane emissions from biogas plants were examined.Researchers from the German Biomass Research Center (DBFZ) and other institutions have evaluated the methane emissions from biogas from various plant concepts.In addition to evaluating the biogas emissions, strategies were developed to reduce them or even prevent them altogether.The results of a study show that methane emissions from biogas plants, also known as methane slip, can be prevented with simple means.This includes the gas-tight covering of fermentation product stores, suitable level controls for the gas storage tanks and regular checking of the gas-carrying lines and containers.The areas most susceptible to leaks are the area between the film connection and the tank wall, at the cable passage of the submersible mixers and on the fixed roof tanks.Another exit point is the overpressure safety device, which is operational.If the operation is based on the filling level of the gas storage tank, the overpressure protection can be prevented from being triggered during normal operation, thus reducing methane emissions.The study was carried out as part of the project to evaluate emissions from biogas plants (Evaluation and reduction of methane emissions from different European biogas plant concepts, in short: EvEmBi).The European Biogas Association supports the project.
